Quarterly Health Beat: Personalize Your Plate
March 15, 2021
Each year during March, we celebrate National Nutrition Month, which focuses on making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Personalize Your Plate,” which supports the philosophy that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition and health. We are all unique with different bodies, goals, backgrounds and tastes.
Recently, Loring Hospital’s Jill Williams, registered dietitian and diabetes education coordinator, hosted a Facebook Live event detailing how to “Personalize Your Plate” to create nutritious meals that meet individual, cultural and personal food preferences. She highlighted that a healthy eating routine should include food from all food groups and can have a positive effect on our health overtime.
Jill’s Quick Tips:
1. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables
2. Choose more whole grains throughout your day
3. Vary your protein choices
4. Complete your meal with a low-fat or fat-free dairy option
If you’re looking for more help personalizing your plate, a registered dietitian can tailor a healthful eating plan that is as unique as you are. Some reasons to visit a registered dietitian may include managing diabetes, weight management, seeking practical lifestyle advice, and more.
